The gears and bearings that carry power from the engine to the chainsaw’s cutting chain are in there. The internal components are enclosed in the gear case, to prevent debris and the like from finding a home. The gears inside the case change the ratio of the speed and torque of the engine for useful cutting. The clutch engages and disengages the cutting chain, and is part of the gear case, where it is housed.
